Every month, the veterinary dermatology literature grows by several dozen articles, published in journals around the world. Keeping up with all of them takes time that clinical practice rarely allows, and a title or an abstract is not enough to judge whether a study should change practice. DermaVet is therefore launching a new section, the DermaVet Journal Club, under the Bibliography tab.
Each month, it brings together the publications devoted to canine and feline dermatology, sorts them by topic and analyzes them for practitioners: what they bring to diagnosis and treatment, and their limitations. The first issue, covering the publications of September 2026, is now online. It brings together 35 publications, sorted into seven categories, from canine atopic dermatitis to skin oncology.
The principle: reading for practitioners
A journal club is a session in which a team presents and discusses recent publications. The DermaVet Journal Club follows the same approach: each article is read, placed in context and judged on what it brings to clinical practice. The selection starts from the publications indexed in PubMed during the month. It includes all those that concern canine and feline skin, including through microbiology, parasitology, oncology or endocrinology. None is left out, but their treatment is graded: a controlled trial receives a full paragraph, an isolated case a few sentences.
What each issue contains
Each issue opens with a summary that synthesizes the month by topic: what changes in treatment, then in diagnosis, then the other new findings useful in practice. The articles are then sorted into broad categories, for example atopic dermatitis, infections, parasitic diseases or skin oncology.
For each publication, the analysis gives the study design, the sample size, the numerical results and what they change in practice. It also points out the main limitation, whether a retrospective study, a trial without a control group or a small sample, because a study cannot be read without its conditions. The full reference of each article appears just below the paragraph that analyzes it, with a direct link to the publication. The complete bibliography closes the issue.
Journal Club and New articles: two complementary uses
The New articles page of the Bibliography tab lists the articles published worldwide during the month. The DermaVet Journal Club extends it: it does not merely report publications, it reads them and keeps what is useful to practitioners. New articles therefore helps you spot an article, and the Journal Club tells you what it brings.
The first issue: September 2026
The September 2026 issue focuses mainly on canine atopic dermatitis, with the revised ICADA guidelines and two trials on Janus kinase inhibitors. It also covers feline parasitic diseases, skin infections and their emerging agents, and the diagnosis of mast cell tumors. The following issues will appear every month and will all remain available from the section page.
